The UK and the OECD

The UK was a founder member of the OECD in 1961, which was created out of the post-World War II OEEC (the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation) under the Marshall Plan. We remain one of the largest budgetary contributors: in 2003 the UK’s contribution was £18.5 million - 7% of the total budget.  The links to issue areas can only give a flavour of the breadth of subjects covered in the Organisation.  UK specific work is also available on the OECD website.

The UK has been concerned to focus the OECD on its key mission, namely to “build strong economies in its member countries, improve efficiency, hone market systems, expand free trade and contribute to development in industrialised as well as developing countries”.

The work of the OECD covers the full range of Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Whitehall objectives.
